Getting Things Done - Why You Aren't Accomplishing Your Goals

Commitment noun

com·mit·ment | \ kə-ˈmit-mənt

Definition of commitment 1a: an agreement or pledge to do something in the future

That's the Merriam-Webster definition of commitment. But the problem I have with the word future is that we all think we have all the time in the world. The traditional wedding vows used to include "till death do us part" - not "until something better came along" right? And if you have children, you made a commitment to take care of them until they were independent enough to care for themselves even on days when you probably weren't always up to it.

Often, the first commitment we tend to break is one we made to ourselves.  What if you were to reframe commitments that you made to yourself as "eliminating all other options"?

Eliminate all Other Options

So far we have talked about:

  • 1. Defining your Why - Your existential purpose for these goals
  • 2. Your priorities or “Big Rocks”
  • 3. Obstacles ...

“You pile up enough tomorrows, and you'll find you are left with nothing but a lot of empty yesterdays.” - Meredith Wilson

Answer these questions to get on a path to Get Things Done:

What obstacles are in your path to accomplishing your Big Rocks?

What are your lesser goals preventing you from accomplishing your Big Rocks?

What is your sense of urgency for completing your goals?

Is your Why strong enough to figure out how to Get Things Done?

What do you value the most and what is preventing you from enjoying that value?

If you had asked me three years ago or ten years ago would I be interested in creating an online course to help people get organized and be more productive, I probably wouldn't have found it that appealing. Even though I consider myself to be an introvert, I do really like being around people as long as it's on my own terms. I do need my time to recover especially when I've been working in some pretty overwhelming situations.

COVID19 Happened for me - NOT to ME!

But then along came COVID-19 of 2020, and suddenly people were even more interested in getting organized than ever because they were at home more. And most of those people had trouble figuring it out for themselves, so my business became busier than ever. However, I can't be in two or five places at once, and I have only so many of my colleagues available to help me with big jobs. Then came my ah-ha moment because I've been in an online coaching program with Benjamin Hardy for over three years now. He's been my mentor for this course and other things getting me unstuck in my life.
